First-Party Reviews

Reviews collected directly by the business and hosted on its own systems (or a tool acting on its behalf), as opposed to reviews left on third-party platforms like Google, Yelp, or Trustpilot.

Definition

First-party reviews belong to the business. They're collected via the business's own forms (or a review-funnel tool integrated into the business's flow), stored in the business's database, and can be displayed on its website, in its marketing, and used for testimonials, case studies, and AggregateRating schema markup. The trade-off versus third-party reviews: first-party reviews are useful for marketing and on-site rich snippets, but they don't influence Google's local rankings (which only count public reviews on Google). The smart play is to collect first-party for marketing AND route satisfied customers to leave a public Google review — they're not mutually exclusive.

Example

A photographer's review funnel asks every client for a rating. If they rate 4-5 stars, they're invited to leave the same words on Google (third-party). If they rate 1-3 stars, the feedback is captured first-party for service recovery. The 4-5 star reviewers often leave both — the photographer ends up with website testimonials AND new Google reviews from the same ask.
